Modernise an older system without freezing the business

A staged migration keeps useful improvements moving while the new platform replaces the old one piece by piece.

Large rewrites place a difficult bet: the business waits for a replacement system while the original product continues to age. When the schedule moves, the organisation has little visible progress to show for the investment.

A staged migration moves one capability at a time behind a controlled routing layer. Each completed step can deliver value on its own, and the team can pause or revise the programme without losing all of the work.

Begin with a well-understood, lower-risk area. The first step reveals what data synchronisation, monitoring and recovery really require. It is better to learn those lessons before moving a critical workflow.

Plan for both systems to operate together. Define which one owns each kind of data, how changes are reconciled and how traffic can return safely if a release causes problems.

Document the rules you uncover. Older systems often contain years of business decisions that were never written elsewhere. A migration is an opportunity to make that knowledge explicit and easier to maintain.

Start with the problem you want to solve.
