Build a design system that stays useful
A design system works when designers and developers share the same decisions and maintain them together.

Design systems lose value when the design file and the application drift apart. Once people stop trusting the components, they work around them and the gap grows faster.
Strong systems give colour, spacing, typography and interaction rules one maintained source. Design tools and code should consume the same decisions wherever possible, with review when an exception is needed.
Build components with the people who will use and maintain them. Designers should review the implemented behaviour, including responsive states and accessibility, while developers should understand the purpose behind each variant.
Start with the components the product uses repeatedly. A small library that solves common problems well is easier to adopt and maintain than a broad catalogue created in advance.
Include accessibility in the component itself. Contrast, keyboard behaviour, focus order and touch targets should be resolved once, tested and improved for every use.
